P7-1

When viewed from the south pole, the earth is a rotating disc. A ship is on the curved surface of the earth at a latitude such that it is 2500 miles from the central axis of rotation. A naval weapon is fired with a muzzle velocity of 2deltadeltadelta.delta ft/s. Presume the barrel is angled relative to the curvature of the earth such that the net effect is to fire the projectile radially outwards from the central axis as shown. Determine the magnitude and direction of the Coriolis acceleration of the projectile at this instant. Also, determine the absolute acceleration of the ship at this location due to the earth's rotation.
